Paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum. Before it becomes wax, crude oil needs to undergo a dewaxing and a chemical bleaching process which produces paraffin wax as a waste product. It is then used as the main ingredient in producing paraffin wax candles and other things like cosmetics, electrical insulators, polishes and wax paper.
Why is Paraffin wax considered harmful?
Aside from the above-stated facts about how and where it's derived, most candles today use paraffin wax which, when burned, creates highly toxic chemicals such as benzene and toluene, which are known to be carcinogens (any substance that promotes the formation of cancer). In addition, the chemicals that are released when these candles are burned are similar to those that constitute diesel fuel that contribute to lung diseases like asthma and lung cancer.
What should customers consider when buying candles?
The answer is simple: CHOOSE CANDLES MADE FROM NATURAL RESOURCES. However, it might be challenging to identify which candles are made out of natural materials versus those that are made from paraffin wax because some companies do not always disclose this kind of information to the public. Also, there are not yet any laws that require companies to do this.
So, in order for customers to make a smart purchase of choosing all-natural candles, we need to educate ourselves and find out whether the stores you’re buying from carry candle products that are made of natural materials or paraffin wax.
